Today’s sorry anniversary: Operation Rolling Blunder
By WDavidStephenson | March 19, 2008
OK, the subprime lender debacle can’t be tied to it (other than the general problem of CEO hubris, whether the organization in question is the US Government or Countrywide Financial). Â However, I’m hard-pressed to think of any other major problem in the US right now, from lousy healthcare for returning vets to underfunding of infrastructure repairs (hmm: we can spend billions to rebuild and rebuild roads over there, but can’t do it over here) that can’t be traced to the military, budgetary, humanitarian (insert adjective of your choice here) debacle that is Iraq. And guess what, folks: even if we were to pull out tomorrow, we’ll be paying for it, not only in monetary terms (see Stiglitz & Bilmes’ “The $3 Trillion War“) but also in loss of the moral high ground internationally,Â
solidifying hatred toward us in the Islamic World, and the loss of so many (estimates of Iraqi civilian losses range from 100,000 to a million – the lower is unacceptable, the upper is obscene — and, to put a human face on it, my son’s late gunner, Sgt. Greg Sutton, and the nearly 4,000 other young Americans who’ve died over there, not to mention my son (thankfully, fully recovered) and the many, many others who have been wounded there, either literally or spiritually. Yet, Bush, Cheney, McCain say persevere. They’ve managed to put us in such a miserable situation that there will be a bloodbath and suffering no matter what course we choose. But I’ll place my chips on Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-PA),  who says we to get out sooner than later.  Blogswarm on the 5th anniversary of the war...Â
