… let’s not forget that it was on this day in 1856 that Rep. Preston Brooks of SC attacked another great Massachusetts senator, Charles Sumner, on the floor of the Senate. Brooks beat Sumner senseless because of Sumner’s relentless and eloquent advocacy for Abolition.
While he never recovered fully, Sumner eventually returned to the Senate floor (hope Teddy can as well!), and served until dying in office in 1874.
Hmmm … John Quincy Adams, Webster, Sumner, Saltonstall, Brooke, Lodge Sr. & Jr., JFK, Paul Tsongas, Ted Kennedy … John Forbes Kerry doesn’t seem quite in that league. Cut more from the William A. Butler cloth, wot say?
